Spancil Hill 03:55
Last night as I lay dreaming, of pleasant days gone by, My mind being bent on rambling to Ireland I did fly I stepped on board a vision and sailed out with a will, till I shortly came to anchor at the cross of Spancil Hill. It being on the 23rd of June, the day before the fair, When Ireland’s sons and daughters in crowds assembled there, The young, the old, the brave and the bold, their journey to fulfill, There were jovial conversations at the fair of Spancil Hill. I went to see my neighbours, to hear what they might say, The old were all dead and gone and the young ones turning grey, I met with tailor Quigley, he’s as bold as ever still, Sure he used to make my breeches when I lived in Spancil Hill. I paid a flying visit to my first and only love, She’s as white as any lily and as gentle as a dove, She threw her arms around me saying "Johnny I love you still", Oh she is Ned the farmer's daughter, the pride of Spancil Hill. I dreamt I held and kissed her, as in the days of yore, Says she "Johnny, you’re only joking, as many's the time before". The cock he crew in the morning, he crew both loud and shrill, And I awoke in California, many miles from Spancil Hill. (See the original poem here:https://www.irishcentral.com/culture/spancil-hill-meaning.)
O Peggy Gordon, You are my darling Come sit you down upon my knee And tell to me the very reason Why I am slighted so by thee I am so deep in love that I can't deny it My heart lies smothered in my breast But it's not for you to let the whole world know it A troubled mind can find no rest I leaned myself on a cask of brandy It was my fancy, I do declare For when I'm drinking, I'm always thinking Wishing Peggy Gordon was there I wished I was in a lonesome valley Where womankind cannot be found And the pretty little birds do change their voices And every moment a different sound I wish I was away in Ingles Far away across the briny sea Sailing over deepest waters Where love nor care never trouble me
There were three old gypsies came to our hall door They came brave and boldly-o And one sang high and the other sang low And the lady's seen the raggle taggle gypsy-o It was upstairs downstairs the lady went Put on her suit of leather-o And it was the cry from around the door She's away wi' the raggle taggle gypsy-o It was late that night when me Lord came in Enquiring for his lady-o And the serving girl she said to him all "She's away wi' the raggle taggle gypsy-o" "Then saddle for me my milk-white steed My big horse is not speedy-o And I will ride and I'll seek my bride She's away wi' the raggle taggle gypsy-o" Now he rode East and he rode West He rode North and South also Until he came to a wide-open plain It was there that he spied his lady-o "How could you leave your goose feather bed With blankets drawn so comely-o? And how could you leave your newly-wedded Lord All for a raggle taggle gypsy-o?" "What do I care for my goose feather bed Wi' blankets drawn so comely-o? Tonight I lie in a wide-open field In the arms of a raggle taggle gypsy-o" "How could you leave your house and your land? How could you leave your money-o? How could you leave your only-wedded Lord All for a raggle taggle gypsy-o?" "What care I for my house and my land? What care I for my money-o? I'd rather have a kiss from the yellow gypsy's lips Than all of the cashier's money-oh!"

On two evenings in December 2010, Floating Crowbar set up recording gear in James Hunter's dining room and played this music live. We sacrificed the perfection achievable by laying down tracks one at a time in a studio in favor of capturing the energy we feel when playing together. A few whistle, drum, and vocal touches were added after the fact, but the result is still a fairly unvarnished portrait of our live sound at that point in time. We enjoy each other's company as well as making music together and hope that this snapshot conveys some of that joy to the listener,
