Friendship takes many forms and this music is one of them.

Occupied by other endeavors by day, we get together when we can for the sake of each other’s company and the music. The same is true of those we met and shared tunes with while traveling together in western Ireland. We live in an age of brilliant professional Celtic musicians who inspire and to whom we owe much. Yet gatherings of working people in homes and pubs, configurations formed by location and common interest, have been the foundation of this tradition for hundreds of years. Expressions of this nature are not always highly polished but their energy rough edges serve as a reminder that the true power of the music comes more from the heart.

While not the truest incarnation of this music or completely traditional by strict standards, we hope this recording conveys some of the joy, reverence, irreverence, fun, and common purpose we feel when we play together. Our connection to the tradition comes from those feelings which we found shared by the musicians we met and whose company we enjoyed in Ireland. Like eating, drinking, and breathing, the music in this context is more a matter of basic sustenance and nourishment than professional vocation.

Whether it was crafting sets of tunes on rainy days in front of a coal fire in Kerry or our first hearing of the traveler's song Smuggling Tin in Mayo, our time in Ireland greatly influenced this recording. Experiences and interactions there inspired the inclusion of Raglan Road and Cúil Aodha, and The Gold Ring (after Morgan found a golden crowbar on the Cliffs of Moher – really!) among others. A brilliant night of music in the Gráinne Uaile pub in Newport brought Óró sé do bheatha abhaile to mind. All that is expressed here is fueled by the welcome kinship we felt with the people of Kerry, Mayo, and Clare and the respect we have for their traditions. We can't wait to come back for more.
